About Tannins
According to medical sources, the anti-inflammatory effect of tannins help control all indications of gastritis, esophagitis, enteritis, and irritating bowel disorders. Diarrhea is also treated with an effective astringent medicine that does not stop the flow of the disturbing substance in the stomach; rather, it controls the irritation in the small intestine.
Tannins not only heal burns and stop bleeding, but they also stop infection while they continue to heal the wound internally. The ability of tannins to form a protective layer over the exposed tissue keeps the wound from being infected even more.
Tannins can also be effective in protecting the kidneys. Tannins have been used for immediate relief of sore throats, diarrhea, dysentery, hemorrhaging, fatigue, and skin ulcers. Tannins can cause regression of tumors that are already present in tissue, but if used excessively over time, they can cause tumors in healthy tissue. Tannins are used indirectly to interrupt the transmission cycle of schistosomiasis. They have also been reported to have anti-viral effects. According to Y.P.S. Bajaj, (1988) in Medicinal and aromatic plants., “When incubated with red grape juice and red wines with a high content of condensed tannins, the poliovirus, herpes simplex virus, and various enteric viruses are inactivated.”

A fuss is being made about Resveratrol, a molecule found in the skin of red grapes, among other places. It has been found to have a host of health effects, most recently prolonging the life spans of obese mice. But biochemistAlan Crozier of the University of Glasgow, says it’s the tannins in red wine that make it so heart-healthy.
Here is another interesting thing: I spoke with a local wine maker at our Vermont Farmer’s Market who told me he never eats organic grapes. “They use copper chloride, a toxic metal, as a pesticide for organic grapes,” he said. I wanted to buy some grape vine from him. The vine–leaves and stem–have chemicals even stronger than the wine itself for reducing cholesterol and protecting the heart. An old Chinese recipe. When I get the vine, I will make a tincture using Vodka.
A Grapevine Tincture
Soak about 2 cups of grape vine and leaves in water and 1 tablespoon vinegar. Rinse well. Cut them into pieces with a scissor and let them dry. Steep the vine and leaves in an air-tight liter container of 80 proof or higher liquor or 2 weeks. Allow an inch of room at the top of the bottle to allow the herbs to expand. Keep it away from heat and light.
The dose is 5 – 10 drops in a glass of red wine or water.
